Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen (he/him/él), Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) and the NCTE Action Fund, served as the keynote speaker, sharing invaluable insights into the challenges faced by transgender individuals in accessing healthcare. The event attracted a diverse audience comprising healthcare professionals, public health advocates, community members, and allies. Through engaging discussions, participants explored strategies to dismantle barriers to transgender healthcare access, the intersectionality of transgender health with other social determinants.

The presentation covered several critical aspects related to transgender health disparities, legislative challenges, and actionable steps for advocacy.

  1. Health Disparities Amongst the Transgender Community:
  • The presentation highlighted various structural health disparities affecting transgender individuals, including avoidance of care, victimization, income barriers, insurance barriers, geographic barriers, and limited telehealth access.
  • Data from the 2022 US Transgender Survey was referenced to illustrate the prevalence of negative experiences and barriers to healthcare access among transgender individuals.
  1. Escalations in Anti-Trans Legislation and its Impacts:
  • The presentation outlined the concerning trend of escalating anti-trans legislation, with a significant increase in proposed bills targeting transgender rights and access to healthcare in recent years.
  • Specific examples of legislation aimed at restricting gender-affirming care for transgender youth and adults were highlighted, along with the detrimental effects on healthcare providers and institutions.
  1. Action Steps:
  • Actionable steps for advocacy were presented, including the importance of robust trans-specific education for healthcare providers, advocacy for trans-inclusive policies within institutions, and support for patients in securing insurance coverage for transition-related healthcare.
  • The role of healthcare professionals in legal and legislative battles, as well as various avenues for advocacy such as writing op-eds, providing expert testimony, and engaging in public education, was emphasized.
  • Additionally, the presentation encouraged individuals to advocate for trans rights within their workplaces and communities, support trans-specific events and organizations, volunteer at community health centers, and contribute to the fight for equality through donations and activism.

Rodrigo’s presentation and the discussion provided comprehensive insights into the challenges faced by transgender individuals in accessing healthcare and offered tangible ways for healthcare professionals and allies to support and advocate for the transgender community.
