Brief Bio
Mario DeMarco, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Clinical Family Medicine and the Director of Family Medicine Obstetrics in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. He has helped to develop and expand a successful community-based prenatal program to support maternity care services in marginalized neighborhoods adjacent to Penn. His academic work has centered around maternity care innovations that can be implemented and scaled in primary care settings. Since 2017, he has held a leadership role in the IMPLICIT Network – a large regional practice-based collaborative that has worked to develop and implement preconception and postpartum care models in primary care settings. Specifically, his current areas of focus include: 1) evaluating effectiveness of an interconception care model which utilizes Well Child Visits to provide preconception care to mothers, 2) developing and implementing a 4th Trimester Care Model in family medicine and obstetrical practices, and 3) developing clinical workflows that allow for improved transition from maternity care to primary care following childbirth.
His work has been supported at the community, state, and federal levels. He currently leads a Pennsylvania Department of Health grant to expand interconception care to more sites across Pennsylvania and leads a grant from the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) to train primary care physicians in high risk maternity care to improve maternal health outcomes. He has used his perspective in primary care to serve on the Pennsylvania Maternal Mortality Review Committee and to help shape research and policy implementation within Penn Medicine
